Its purpose is not just to unfold the history of Russian art, but to give an idea of the type of culture seen and comprehended from the standpoint of modernity. This led to the selection of exhibits, their not too elitist character. With purely aesthetic principles of choice, the most important thing in this context - typological features - can slip away, turn out to be, as it were, blurred, crushed. That is why a multidimensional thematic principle of the show was chosen, which gives an idea of the various layers of this powerful cultural layer in its long historical existence. The exhibition opens with a section dedicated to the monumental and decorative art of Ancient Rus - stone construction, decorative decoration of buildings, monumental painting. The largest section of the exhibition is represented by icon painting - the most widespread type of fine art in medieval Russia. The section of arts and crafts contains material from ancient times to the beginning of the 20th century. Book art is an indicator of the level of culture in general. Therefore, the manuscripts and early printed books on display at the exhibition characterize this level clearly and completely.
