14 MO Surinam Cherry Black/Eugenia Uniflora (Pitanga/FL Cherry)live Tree Potted

Description: PLEASE NOTE THAT I PREFER NOT TO SHIP TO HAWAII, PUERTO RICO OR INTERNATIONALLY DUE TO THE RISK OF THE PLANT NOT SURVIVING THE JOURNEY. IF YOU WISH TO COVER THE COST OF EXPEDITED SHIPPING YOU CAN MESSAGE ME PRIOR TO BIDDING OR PURCHASING A SEEDLING SO THAT WE CAN DISCUSS OPTIONS BUT I CAN NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR LOSSES DUE TO USPS OR OTHER SHIPPING CARRIER SERVICES THAT DO NOT DELIVER ON TIME RESULTING IN THE DEATH OF YOUR SEEDLING(S) I make every effort to ship plants as soon as payment is received. I do not provide hot packs so be mindful of cold temperatures in your area. This evergreen perennial tolerates mild temperatures when it is young preferably no lower than 50 F. For this reason, you may need to be present when the post man delivers your package or have someone collect it from your mailbox and bring it indoors to warmer temperatures before it gets damaged. Older SURINAM CHERRY TREES can handle brief exposures to lower temps as low as 30 F but these are very young immature plants and do not have that kind of vigor. I ship all of my plants via USPS FIRST CLASS 2-to-3-day delivery or Fed Ex Home delivery/GROUND/SMART POST with tracking that is available upon request but unfortunately, sometimes the postal service does not deliver on time and packages do sometimes get lost. Please try to understand, this is something that is out of my control. If your plant arrives damaged beyond saving, please message me immediately with pictures of your plant still secured to the box exactly as it appeared on arrival at the time of delivery so that I may correct the problem as soon as possible. There is no need to leave negative feedback as I always try to answer questions or concerns on a very timely basis, sometimes within minutes of being messaged. Your satisfaction is my greatest concern and I will do everything possible to make things right. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY GARDENING :) THE SURINAM CHERRY BELONGS TO THE MYRTLE FAMILY AND CAN BE GROWN AS EITHER A SHRUB OR A TREE. IT WAS INTRODUCED TO NORTH AMERICA IN THE 1930'S BUT HAS ITS ORIGINS IN CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA. THIS FRUIT TREE WILL GROW BEST IN WARMER SOUTHERN STATES SUCH AS FLORIDA AND MISSISSIPPI. IT CAN ALSO BE FOUND GROWING IN HAWAII WHERE IT IS KNOWN AS PUMPKIN CHERRY. OTHER NAMES INCLUDE BRAZILIAN CHERRY, PITANGA AND CAYENNE CHERRY. IN COLDER STATES, UNLESS GROWN IN CONTAINERS SO THEY CAN BE MOVED TO A WARMER AREA SUCH AS A GREEN HOUSE, TEMPERATURES BELOW 30 F WILL CAUSE FREEZING WHICH WILL OF COURSE RESULT IN DAMAGE OR PLANT DEATH. IN IDEAL CONDITIONS THE PLANT GROWS QUITE EASILY WITH MINIMAL REQUIRED CARE ONCE WELL ESTABLISHED. IT IS AN INSECT ATTRACTANT DURING FLOWERING WHICH WILL BRING IN BEES, BIRDS, LIZARDS AND MAMMALS WHICH WILL FEED ON YOUR FRUIT IF THEY BEAT YOU TO IT. ALTHOUGH NOT A TRUE CHERRY IT HAS A SIMILAR APPEARANCE AND HAS BEEN DUBBED AS A TROPICAL CHERRY MUCH LIKE THE BARBADOS CHERRY. SURINAM CHERRY IS SELF FERTILE, SO YOU WILL NOT REQUIRE MORE THAN ONE TREE TO OBTAIN FRUIT. THE FRUIT ITSELF RESEMBLES A TINY BITE SIZED PUMPKIN THAT CAN BE FOUND IN ONE OF 2 VARIETIES. ONE IS THE MORE COMMON DEEP RED WHILE THE OTHER IS THE RARER DARK CRIMSON/PURPLE/BLACK VARIETY WHICH IS CONSIDERED SWEETER AND LESS RESINOUS THAN THE RED VARIETY WHEN AT ITS PEAK OF RIPENESS. MAXIMUM FLAVOR IS OBTAINED ONLY WHEN THE FRUIT REACHES MAXIMUM RIPENESS MUCH LIKE A PERSIMMON WHOSE FLAVOR IS ACTUALLY UNPALLATABLE IF NOT EATEN WHEN COMPLETELY RIPE. NOTE THAT THE SEED IS EXTREMELY RESINOUS AND SHOULD NOT BE EATEN. SEEDS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO CAUSE DIARRHEA IN DOGS AS WELL AS UPSET STOMACH IN HUMANS. THE FRUIT CAN BE EATEN OUT OF HAND. IN SOME COUNTRIES THE SEEDS ARE REMOVED THEN THE FRUIT IS SPRINKLED WITH SUGAR AND REFRIGERATED PRODUCING A DESERT THAT CAN BE EATEN LIKE STRAWBERRIES. THE FRUIT MAKES AN EXCELLENT JAM OR JELLY. LEAVES CAN BE CRUSHED AND USED AS AN INSECT REPELLANT. SOIL: SURINAM CHERRY IS NOT FUSSY, IT IS ADAPTALBE TO DIFFERENT SOIL TYPES THAT INCLUDE ALKALINE OR ACIDIC SOILS, CLAY, SAND OR LOAM. AN IDEAL PREFERENCE WOULD BE A DEEP POROUS SOIL THAT IS RICH IN HUMUS WITH GOOD DRAINAGE THAT HAS A PH OF 5.5 TO 7.5. IT WILL ALSO THRIVE IN SOIL THAT IS RICH IN ORGANIC NUTRIENTS ESPECIALLY CLAY OR SANDY LOAM THAT CONTAINS COURSE MATERIAL. IT IS NOT TOLERANT OF MARSHY AREAS OR SOILS THAT ARE HIGH IN SALT SUCH AS COASTAL LAND ADJACENT TO BODIES OF SALT WATER. WATER: MODERATE WATERING IS SUFFICIENT UNTIL YOUR SEEDLING BECOMES WELL ESTABLISHED. MODERATE RAINFALL OR IRRIGATION IS MORE THAN ADEQUATE SINCE SURINAM CHERRY HAS A TENDENCY TO SETTING DEEP TAP ROOTS WHICH ALLOWS IT TO BE TOLERANT OF LONG DRY SEASONS. IF YOU PLANT DOES SHOW SIGNS OF DROOPING/WILTING DUE TO DRY CONDITIONS, IT WILL RESPOND QUICKLY TO IRRIGATION. FRUIT BECOME LARGER AND SWEETER AFTER ADEQUATE WATERING IS PROVIDED. SURINAM CHERRY IS RELATIVELY FORGIVING OF STANDING WATER AND IS SOMEWHAT TOLERANT OF THESE CONDITIONS BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE ENCOURAGED IF AVOIDABLE. SUNLIGHT: FULL SUN OR PARTIAL SHADE WILL PROVIDE SUFFICIENT SUNLIGHT FOR SURINAM CHERRY TO THRIVE. CLIMATE: USDA HARDINESS ZONES 9B TO 11. SURINAM CHERRY IS HEAT TOLERANT BUT DOES BEST IN TEMPS IN THE 70'S F. WINTER TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 46 TO 68F IS IDEAL ALTHOUGH A WELL ESTABLISHED PLANT WILL TOLERATE TEMPS AS LOW AS THE HIGH 30'S F FOR LIMITED EXPOSURES. IF GROWN IN COLDER ZONES, PLANTS WILL HAVE TO BE BROUGHT INDOORS OR TO PROTECTED AREAS THAT REMAIN ABOVE 30F. SURINAM CHERRY ALTHOUGH NOT TECHNICALLY A TRUE CHERRY, IT IS CONSIDERED A TROPICAL "CHERRY" SINCE IT DOES NOT REQUIRE CHILLING HOURS TO ACHIEVE ABUNDANT FRUITING. FERTILIZATION: QUARTERLY FEEDINGS WITH A FULL SPECTRUM/COMPLETE FERTILIZER WILL PROMOTE HEAVIER FRUITING. A COMPLETE ORGANIC FERTILIZER APPLIED EVERY 1 TO 2 MONTHS WILL BE ADEQUATE. DO NOT FERTILIZE DURING WINTER MONTHS. TRANSPLANT INSTRUCTIONS : PRIOR TO TRANSPLANTING YOUR SEEDLING PLANT, PLACE THE NURSERY POT IN A CONTAINER WITH ABOUT 2 INCHES OF WATER FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS SO THAT YOU CAN SATURATE THE SOIL WITH MOISTURE WHICH HELPS IT TO HOLD THE ROOTS SECURE. THIS PREVENTS THE ROOT BALL FROM FALLING APART DURING TRANSPLANTATION. WHEN YOU ARE READY TO TRANSPLANT YOUR SURINAM CHERRY TREE TO A LARGER PLASTIC NURSERY CONTAINER (OR TO YOUR GARDEN LOCATION OF CHOICE) DO SO BY CAREFULLY REMOVING YOUR PLANT FROM THE 1 GALLON NURSERY POT WITHOUT DISTURBING THE ROOT BALL. THIS CAN BE DONE BY GENTLY CUTTING AWAY THE BASE AND SIDES OF THE NURSERY POT TO CAREFULLY RELEASE THE ROOT BALL OF YOUR TREE. FAILURE TO CAREFULLY REMOVE YOUR PLANT FROM THE NURSERY POT WITHOUT DISTURBING THE ROOT BALL MIGHT RISK SHOCKING OR KILLING YOUR DELICATE SEEDLING. SEEDLING SURINAM TREES HAVE A LONG TAP ROOT THAT NEEDS TO REMAIN INTACT UNTIL THE SEEDLING IS WELL ESTABLISHED. MY RECOMMENDATION IS THAT YOU TRANSPLANT AND GROW YOUR TREE IN A 3 TO 5 GALLON PLASTIC NURSERY CONTAINER UNTIL YOUR TREE IS AT LEAST 4 TO 5 OR MORE FT TALL BEFORE TRANSPLANTING TO YOUR GARDEN LOCATION OF CHOICE. IF YOU PREFER TO TRANSPLANT TO A LARGER PLASTIC NURSERY CONTAINER, (3 GALLONS OR LARGER) USE ANY GOOD QUALITY WELL DRAINING POTTING SOIL TO PROMOTE GROWTH.
