Description: 1598 English Land Indenture Type of Antiquarian Document: 1598 English Land Indenture, a “Final Concord” and a “Recognizance of Debt” / “Deed of Covenant.” As it was a registered legal process, it was signed with the typical medieval British formality on November 10, 1598, the 40thyear of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and filed with the Court of Common Pleas (a copy is in the National Archives of the United Kingdom!) IT IS NOT A PHOTOGRAPHIC COPY OR REPLICA,as is replete on eBay: it is an original, one-of-a-kind document, 420 years old. Size,Materials, Ink, Seal: 12 1/8” X 17 5/8” with scalloped top (indicating it was taken from a page in the register of the Court of Common Pleas), vellum in near pristine condition. No shriveling, warping, tearing, smears or stains. The only folds were made post-sealing by the scrivener,420 years ago. Brown ink (the standard for that time) which is unfaded, all very legible, handwritten in a learned hand. The brown wax seal with a coat of arms from Knight Mayne/crest affixed, as well as vellum tail, are all undamaged.It is truly of museum caliber, museum framed and matted with non-reflective protective glass. Type of Script: The main text is in what is called“Engraving Secretary Hand;” the display matter is in “Book Hand” or “BlackLetter” script; the signatures of thefour witnesses, verso, are in aneducated “Personalized Italic.” The grantor of the land, Sir Anthony Mayne, Knight of the Realm, signs in“Secretary Hand” across the seal’s vellum strip. The People of the Document: The grantor was SIR ANTHONY MAYNE,an important nobleman from Byddenden, England, County of Kent, who was made a Knight of the Realm in 1603 by King James I after he personally was responsible for building the first affordable low-cost housing for his village, among the first such ventures in the U.K.. The grantee of the land was Sir JOSIAS SEYLYARD, of Linton. The witnesses signing verso were Nicholas SEYLIARD, John MABB, Lancelott (yes, Lancelott)SANFEILD, and Christofer WARWICKE. Also named for genealogical interest are Lady Bridgett Mayne, PhillippSymonson, “Widow” Thatcher, John Best, and Chief Justice Edmund Anderson[Knight]. PROPERTY-LOCATION: This was a 900 year-long leaseholdfor land and structures in Byddenden, County of Kent, England (near modern Linton). PROVENANCE: From the antiquarian collection of former NY Judge B. Marc Mogil. Acquired in London in 1975. Brass identifiersare mounted within the glass regarding the owner and source of the document.
