On John Wilkins, D.D. from the internet: "John Wilkins (14 February 1614 – 19 November 1672) was an Anglican clergyman, natural philosopher, writer, and one of the founders of the Royal Society. He served as bishop of Chester from his 1668 until his death. Wilkins is one of the few people to have been Chancellor of both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Although he was a polymath, he was not one of the most important scientific innovators of his time. His personal qualities were evident to his contemporaries, manifested in the de-escalation of political tensions during the Oxford Intercession, the founding of the bipartisan Royal Society, and his outreach to Protestant Dissenters. He was one of the founders of a new natural theology compatible with the science of his time. He is known, among other things, for his Essay on the Character of Reality and the Philosophical Language (1668), in which he proposed a universal language and an integrated system of measurement similar to the metric system. Wilkins lived in a time of great political and religious controversy, yet managed to maintain partnerships with people of all political affiliations. He was key in leading the Church of England on a path toward understanding as many denominations as possible and "tolerance of other denominations". Gilbert Burnett called him "the wisest clergyman I ever knew. He loved mankind and took pleasure in doing good." His stepdaughter married John Tillotson, who became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1691."
