Description: Major work of Irenaeus, bishop of Lyon. In this Adversus Omnes Haereses he attacked gnosticism, especially the system of Valentinus and the millenarianism popular in Montanist circles (Cross, Oxford Dict.). Written about A.D. 180, this work by the early Church father rails against Gnosticism and other early Church heresies. Notes and other commentary seems to be added by John Grabe, chaplain of Christ Church. An interesting text with sections in Latin, Greek and what appears to be the occasional Hebrew text. Leather over heavy boards with a ridged spine which is loose from the binding: top band is missing and the next band is labeled in black with gilt lettering. Nice decorations cover the rest of the spine. Paper is heavy and dense with nice watermark. Signed on spare “William J. Johnson/Keble College Oxon”. Foxing and paper discoloration throughout. Extensive footnoting by Grabe. Great Frontispiece of what looks like the angels and archangels casting out a multi-headed beast assisted by a Bishop and his assistants. And vignette on title page of what should be Britannia(?0 in front of state buildings with a shield, spear, caduceus and other items. Good Condition: Folio (16” X 10 1/2” approx): leather over boards: ridged spine present but away from binding with first band missing, next having title in gilt, the rest having a geometric design of a gilt bouquet in the center with floral corners: Frontispiece intact and very good; vignette on title page printed in black: “Adversus Haereses (On the Detection and Overthrow of the so-called Gnosis”: Bishop Irenaeus, Bishop of Lugdunensis (Lyons) with commentary byJoannes Ernestus Grabe (John Grabe): Oxford: Thomas Bennet, Printer: 1702.RAREB1702FPQA
