Description: 1823 handwritten commonplace book of poetry done by Joseph Hall of Halifax Author: Hall, Joseph Title: 1823 handwritten commonplace book of poetry done by Joseph Hall of Halifax Description: Wraps. 7.75 x 6 inches, 14 pp, very good, tanning, light stains and wear. A commonplace book of poetry, some we can identify, others we can't. Dated October 31, 1823, Halifax and signed by Joseph Hall at the end of the last page, but we don't know which of several Halifaxes this is from. Starts out with Song III by Laura Sophia Temple, Carl Benedict's "I cannot mourn that time has fled..." Oliver Goldsmith's "The discontented Rich are Poor," the anonymous "Dignity of the American Bar" which begins "Shall stripes be the lot of American Seamen," translation of a German song by Claudina Blumenberg beginning "O sweet flows the current by town and by tower..." Samuel Woodworth's "The Watermelon," "Washing Day," an anonymous poem, "The Evening Hour" by Mrs. Cornelia Baron Wilson, "The Bower of Bendemeer" by Thomas Campbell, "The Female Auctioneer" by "Lucius," "Virtuous Love" by Henry Cogswell Knight, "I Love Only Thee" by Woodworth, "The World a Barber's Shop" (we couldn't find this one online), "Absence of Friends," an anonymously written poem, "My Childhood," another anonymous poem we couldn't find online, etc. Very good.
