Description: Here is a nice rare old "Hard Times" token made of copper, in quite decent collectible condition overall, measuring app. 1 & 1/16" across, with a plain edge. This seldom seen early American piece has circulated well, judging by its shape, and it has some imperfections as one might expect, but they are nothing too severe, as the photos hopefully indicate - mostly it is just honest wear. I have not cleaned or altered its appearance in any manner, and three of the pictures have been "enhanced" for clarity. The token is listed as being struck in 1835 in Rulau's reference work, where it is identified as HT 201, and Rulau gives much of the history of Howell Works in his description. The token was a company piece, primarily a marine engine manufacturer, and was issued for store use, the "Garden" still an object of speculation as regarding its history and connection to the company. Originally an establishment called the Monmouth Furnace in the New Jersey county of the same name, it was taken over by James P. Allaire in about 1822, when he changed the name to Howell Works. These tokens, when encountered, are notorious for having a weakly struck reverse, with the work "token" seldom complete. The obverse pictures a rose at the center, with "Howell Works Garden" around, while the reverse has the word "Token" across, the first and last letters visible. Rare! $220. Please note I am always happy to combine shipping costs should you win more than one of my auctions, and I usually add just a minimal additional cost per item. Your business is sincerely appreciated!
