Description: 1840s Richard Rothwell / Herbert Bourne Print titled: NOVITIATE MENDICANTS. Important to note that the work here represents the Engraving (Mezzotint Method) of print. However this item for sale is a print of that, not an actual engraving. The original artist of the first version (oil painting completed in1837), as marked states "R, Rothwell" which is "Richard Rothwell, and the engraver whom reproduced his work a year or so later in this style is labeled "sculpt" and "H. Bourne" which is "Herbert Bourne". The print states the original is located at "Sheepshanks Gallery". The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) located in London England, houses the Sheepshanks collection, which was donated by John Sheepshanks in 1857. This collection of paintings, watercolors, and drawings formed an important part of the museum's early holdings. Richard Rothwell RHA (1800-1868) began his artistic career as a portrait painter in Dublin, Eire. He then moved to London and became studio assistant to Sir Thomas Lawrence, finishing several of Lawrence's works after the his death in 1830. By the early 1840s Rothwell had established a good practice of his own. He travelled several times to Europe and twice to the USA and described himself as having 'the dream of a posthumous fame'. Herbert Bourne (1825-1907) was born in Staffordshire in 1825, into an artistic family. He soon showed artistic talents himself as well, as becomes clear from an early 1840s census which had him down as 'historical line engraver'. He had taken local art classes but later moved to London, where his engraving career soon took flight. Shipped very quickly and carefully with USPS or FedEx.
