In this pattern, popularly called Vintage Grape, there are over 100 different pieces, both place and serving. The sales for Vintage exceeded that of any pattern until First Love appeared in 1937. Vintage is an Art Nouveau design of grapes, tendrils, vines and leaves in a well balanced handle that fits the hand beautifully. Vintage remains the leading seller in antique silverplate today, with many folks filling out an inherited set. Salad as a part of everyday meals is a post World War 2 phenomenon. Before 1945, a lettuce salad was a seasonal dish, mainly in spring and fall when lettuce was available locally. Strangely, iceberg lettuce, the fairly standard base of most salads, was developed in the 1920's and only began to be shipped all over the country in the late 1930's. The separate fork for 1930's when it slowly began to replace the soup spoon as the fourth item in a place setting. Previously, salad forks were sold separately in lots of first six, and then four. After 1945, people quit taking their raw vegetables and making soup; instead they put them into salads. This pattern has more than one shape of salad or dessert fork. GRAPE NUTS, the late Suzie MacLachlan's guide to the grape patterns, shows the forks offered here as illustration B on pages 8 & 9. The backs of the forks are decorated. The 4 salad forks offered here measure about 6". These are not pieces of new silver. They show the patina of as much as 120 years of use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. There is no plate loss. These forks have been carefully used and well cared for. I polish all silver before listing on eBay. Please email with any questions before bidding.
