Description: 1853 Liberty Half Eagle $5 gold, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by NGC as Choice Almost Uncirculated, AU-58. This particular year and mintage series is priced for its unique high demand; but this specimen is also special for its pedigree. Its provenance, as noted by NGC on the label, is the 20th century Rive d’Or Hoard, or bank collection; either term serves. France of the 19th, and then 20th century, received U.S. “old gold” of all major denominations in trade. Some personages – collectors, bank managers, or people who were both – started to safeguard this stockage and kept adding to it whenever a U.S. gold coin came in. As France was on wartime front lines or occupied in World War II, one can imagine the challenges this posed. The coins were maintained until about the 1950s or 60s, when all European U.S. “old” gold holdings started to sell and return to buyers paying record premiums for them, many of these dealers being Americans, which is how coins of this provenance got encapsulated. Most Rive d’Or gold coins, so it is said, are in AU-58 grade; this little wear is accounted for by the transatlantic shipping transit, handling by bankers, inventories (and admiring), and decades of storage so they wouldn’t receive more wear. AU-58 is a reasonable grade for such history; and as we know, it is a smart grade to collect in, with lustre mostly intact s a rule and wear often impossible to find without a loupe. This is the case with this jewel of a coin here. It has orange-gold lustre as a coin on the edge short of being Uncirculated; and it has brown tones beginning near features and letters, as marks which help identify the coin. This is a collectible coin but is also a museum-level historical piece. It is available here for a discerning collector, at a competitive price as compared to non-pedigreed peers on the market.
