Account of two expeditions by the British meant to develop trade relations with China. The first in 1868 was led by Col. Sladen with Anderson as medical officer and naturalist. With a guard of 50 armed police they set off from Mandalay to Bhamo by boat with the intention of crossing into Yunnan China via Momien. Their efforts leading up to a withdrawal are covered in the first 11 chapters. The second expedition in 1875 was led by Col. Browne, with the author in the same capacity as before. Again, failure plus the murder of Augustus Raymond Margery and his staff who had travelled from Shanghai to meet them with official documents from the Chinese government supporting the expedition. At the back is a vocabulary of common words in English/Kakhyen/Shan/Hotha Shan/Leesaw and Poloung. Three maps, a frontispiece and fifteen full page black and white illustrations. Hardcover, with dark green boards and gilt trim and titles. Some foxing throughout especially on title page and front endpaper. 479 pages; heavy book. Front and back cover reinforced at gutter with tape, with is doing the job but doesn't look great but probably could be professionally redone better. One of the maps is a replacement copy and is detached (not shown). The other two maps (shown) are folding and in nice condition. Two-inch split to cover material along back of spine. Even with the issues, the volume presents well. Very uncommon on the market.
