In the late 1830's and 1840's Hays performed double duty as both a surveyor and a Texas Ranger. He quickly gained notoriety for his leadership and bravery as an "Indian Fighter". During the war with Mexico, Hays led the 1st Regiment of the Texas Mounted Volunteers in battle at Monterey and Mexico City.
