Djalma Santos was elected the greatest right-back in the history of football by FIFA, experts, polls, newspapers, magazines and media outlets around the world, such as: Placar magazine in 1981; Venerdì magazine, 1997; Tarde Newspaper (2004); and again by Placar magazine in its latest survey. He played 100 matches for the Brazilian national team, having participated in the 1954, 1958, 1962 and 1966 World Cups. He and Pelé are the only players to have started at least one match as a starter for the Brazilian national team in four World Cups. Along with Germans Franz Beckenbauer and Philipp Lahm, he is one of only three players to be chosen three times as the best in his position in the World Cup. He was also elected to the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team in 1954, 1958 and 1962. Djalma Santos finished his career without having been sent off once.
