Description: 1959 Renato Mazza Portrait Oil Painting 30" tall x 24" wide Biography The artist, sculptor, teacher, art appraiser and former Italian Consul in Dallas, Texas discovered his love of art and began sketching at age 5. He was born in Castrovillari, Italy, November 9, 1913. He traveled Europe with his parents as his father was an Italian diplomat. He was a member of an old Italian family steeped in tradition in medieval times. He spoke and wrote fluently in six languages and is a distant descendant of Clement XIV, Pope of the Middle Ages. After graduating from University of Venice with an arts degree and University of Padua with a law degree he came to the U.S. in 1938. He served four years in the Army and then on the east and west coasts. He arrived in Dallas in 1947 and established his gallery. He received many commissions to do portraits of royalty, celebrities and well known families in Dallas and around the world. He also created busts of famous local people including Everett DeGoyler Sr, Jake and Nancy Hamon, Robert Dedman, Virginia and Algur Meadows and Dean Robert G. Storey, founder of the Southwest Legal Foundation. Exhibits include Rome, where he had a studio for years, as well as Europe and seven major U.S. cities. His philosophy as an artist: "Attacking the canvas without hours of relentless research is pointless. The birth of a portrait should involve constant study, solitude, agony or passion, but never a lukewarm approach." Renato (René) Mazza was featured at the Mary Tomás Studio Gallery on July 31, 2010, from 6 to 9 p.m. The preview was held on Friday, July 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Mary Tomás Studio Gallery is located in the Design District in building 1080 at 1110 Dragon St., Dallas, Texas 75207. The show titled "Celebrating Noted Portrait Painter and Sculptor 20th Century Artist Renato Mazza" encompassed a collection of portraits and busts of many well-known public figures in the Dallas area and around the world. Included were elected officials, such as a former Dallas mayor, Texas governor and lieutenant governor, along with celebrities, oil giants and philanthropists. Mary Tomás, artist and curator, recognized the significance of Mazza's impact on the Dallas art community. "As a Dallas gallery owner, I think it is important to recognize noted artists while they are still living and give an opportunity for collectors and friends to see work that was previously out of the public eye," said Tomás. "Artists of today are building reputations on the shoulders of great artists like Renato Mazza." Mazza was a self-taught artist, sculptor, teacher, appraiser and former Dallas Italian Consul. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Venice, a law degree from the University of Padua and became a student at the Academy of Arts in Venice. oil on canvas, Signed on the front R Mazza.
