Description: 1978 Sierra Leone 50 Cents & 1, 2, 5 Leones Uncirculated Specimen Set w/ COA "Sierra LeoneIn 1462 the peninsula today occupied by Sierra Leone was named Serra Lyon - Lion Mountain - by the early Portuguese explorer Pedro da Cintra. The lion symbol survives in the watermark which is prominently featured on both the front and back of the 1-, 2- and 5-Leone banknotes. The watermarks are surrounded by geometric borders. The borders of the 1-, 2- and 5-Leone notes are particularly worthy of note - the combination of bold shapes, rich colors and deep engraving producing a most handsome effect. The borders on the 50-cent note are also finely engraved but in a more traditionally intricate style. And in place of the watermark, the beautiful hibiscus flower is featured. Another plant native to Africa, the poinsettia, appears on the 5-Leone note, next to the engraved portrait of President Siaka Stevens. The backs of the 50-cent and 1- and 5-Leone notes depict the Bank of Sierra Leone, and this African nation's Parliament Building is also shown on the 5-Leone note. The national coat of arms of the republic is featured on the backs of all the notes. The coffee plant on the 5-Leone note and the cocoa bean on the 50-cent specimen reflect the importance of agriculture to the country's economy.
