Description: 1x 1988 Australia $10 Bicentennial Polymer Banknotes – UNC - AB Prefix - Consequtive NosWorld’s Greatest Banknotes Series – World Firsts - The Polymer NoteOne in the series of the world’s greatest banknotes is arguably Australia’s most stunning and beautiful banknote ever printed – the 1988 $10 Bicentennial Polymer Banknote. In January 1988, history was made in the banknote world when the first polymer note, a $10, was released into general circulation. This note was the result of Note Printing Australia (NPA), Australia's leading security printer and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the Federal Government research institution. On the obverse, this commemorative note depicts an Aboriginal youth wearing body painting, ancient rock art and hand stencils with a Ceremonial Morning Star pole, symbols of Australia's Aboriginal heritage - the work of Aboriginal artist, Terry Dhurritjini Yumbulul (b. 1950 on Wessel Island, Arnhem land). On the reverse, scenes of European settlement and the general development of a multicultural nation. The banknote also features an Optically Variable Device (OVD) with the image of Captain Cook which can be viewed from both sides of the note and is the key security feature. Because of a diffraction effect, the OVD when angled to the light produces a rainbow pattern. A very thin aluminium coating forms the reflective surface. Two prefix series were printed: the AA and AB series, and were only issued in 1988.While these banknotes are still legal tender in Australia, they are too highly prized as collectors' items to be used as currency. In the 36 years since 1988, and following the wild success of Australia's polymer technology, more than 60 countries have adopted it for their entire banknote series, with more countries embracing it every year.
