Description: A very handsome pair of mid-19th century silver plated wine bottle coasters by Elkington & Company of London, showing swelled and pierced bodies rising from turned satinwood bases with a vacant central silverplate boss. Both coasters carry a full set of marks, including makers mark "E&Co in shield under crown", "E", "M", "&Co", being the makers mark used by Elkington, Mason & Co between 1842 and 1864. The makers mark is followed by the date letter "O” in lozenge" for 1853. One of the coasters is also stamped "R3754", a pattern registration number. The use of satinwood for the bases on these fine wine coasters is relatively rare, as fruitwood such as walnut was most often used, further illustrating the high level of quality that Elkington & Company are known for. A magnificent and important pair that simply don't come along often, they span at their widest approximately 7.5 inches with the wooden bases having an approximate diameter measuring 3.75 inches internal or 5.5 inches on reverse. ELKINGTON BIO: George Richards Elkington & Henry Elkington were the first to discover & patent the silver-plating process in the 1830s. They were subsequently awarded Royal warrants to several members of the British Royal Family including Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, Queen Mary and King George VI. Elkington & Company were also the suppliers of flatware to the British Royal Yacht ‘Britannia’ as well as the luxury dining sections of the Titanic. The item(s) are antique and sold as is/as found. The item(s) may show wear, fading, scratches, repairs, restoration, original imperfections and/or damage from normal use. In particular, one coaster has a slightly off center piercing that may have been the result of a ding as shown in photos. Examine photos carefully as they are part of the description. Imperfections were factored into pricing. No returns or refunds.
