Description: Two (2) Antique J. Baillie 1840s Lithographs. One titled Jane, and the second titled "Catherine", with Fine Original Frames, Glass, and Backing. One is dated 1846, printed in New York and fully marked at bottom of print. Each frame measures approx. 17 1/2" x 13 1/4". Image area is approx. 13 1/2" x 9 1/2". Frames are in nice condition with only minor blemishes. Glass is all good and clear. Wooden rough hewn backs are original. The previous owners had glued parts of an old paper grocery bag on the back to cover the old nails holding the back on to keep them from scratching their walls. I removed the paper backing. Some older nails had been replaced with newer brads to hold backs on. Prints show some aging and discoloration from age. Wonderful Antique Lithographs from Quality Estate. A little about Mr. Baillie, in case you are not familiar with his artistic history: James S. Baillie American, active 1838-1855FollowJames Baillie started as a framer in 1838, and then became an artist and lithographer in 1843 or 1844. He discovered how to color lithographs while working as an independent contractor for Currier & Ives in the mid 1840’s. A prolific lithographer and colorist for Currier & Ives; his prints were extremely popular with a wide distribution. J. Baillie spent his later years concentrating on painting instead of lithography. The Frames are wonderful and have the original glass with tons of tiny bubbles in them. The frames match and have the original hand worked wood backing. Someone had covered the backing with a paper grocery bag to keep the old nails from scratching their walls.
