200 gold mines, Kern County, Calif, RARE 1933 report, BIG map, pix, locations OP

Description: Rare 1933 1st-edition has 200 gold mines in Kern County, California Mines near Randsburg, Kernville, Mojave, Piute, Rosamond, Bodfish, Garlock (El Paso Mtns.), Isabella, Weldon, MORE! Includes separate maps, photos and charts of Kern County mines; also pinpoints mines by EXACT range-and-township coordinates Fifty-stamp mill at Yellow Aster Mine in Randsburg as it appeared in 1933. This extremely rare OLD first-edition report lists and locates 200 gold mines in 1933 Kern County, California. Some of these mines are in the very famous (and rich) gold-mining areas near Mojave, Johannesburg and Randsburg. Others are spread all over the county: near Kernville, Piute, Rosamond, Bodfish, Garlock (El Paso Mountains), Isabella, Weldon, famous Goler Wash's rich placers and more. Many, many of these areas are located on public lands and open to prospecting and exploring, hiking and metal detecting. Want to know what the Buckboard mine looks like underground? You won't be finding another map like this any time soon. Mine is in the Rand Mountains, 2.5 miles from Randsburg. "So what," you say, "I'll just buy a new guide. It must have all these locations in it." Wrong. It will have some of the locations, sure — but the locations probably will be for the big mines that everyone already knows about. That information is only helpful if you're writing a high-school paper, but not if you're really serious about new places to prospect, metal detect or just explore. You want the locations of overlooked and forgotten mines, prospects and placer areas. This report is also extremely valuable for other reasons. One artifact collector uses the info on forgotten mines to establish supply routes. He has great luck in finding old bottles along these routes, and also other smaller mine workings, too small to even have been listed in a book like this. One prospector uses these books to find in what rock types gold occurred. He finds similar rock types in unexplored areas — and often finds gold. Ditto for a metal-detectorist; he finds all sorts of untouched areas that have never been picked over. This report is a treasure trove of information for history buffs, bottle collectors, stock certificate collectors, photographers, geologists, hikers, offroaders, rockhounds, prospectors — just about anyone interested in learning about, exploring or prospecting old mine sites in historic Kern County. Nearly impossible to find; not tourist gift-shop junk I have been buying and selling California gold mining books and artifacts on ebay for over 20 years, and I've never seen another one of these offered for sale. It was produced by the California Division of Mines and Geology. This is not some hokey piece of tourist claptrap. No official reprints were ever done. This book was produced about miners by miners for miners. It also includes several oversize foldout maps and historical photos of the mining properties, all available nowhere else. Ten-stamp mill at the Mammoth mine, about five miles of Isabella. Yes, the book gives exact range and township coordinates for its location. The press runs on these reports were tiny, and collectors are just not selling them at any price these days. You don't have to be Einstein to figure out why. It would take you six months of visiting one mine a day to visit all the mines in this book. Don't pass this one up, thinking you'll see another one of these in a couple of weeks. It ain't gonna happen. Except for insignificant wear, this copy is in phenomenal shape, a miracle considering the thin fragile paper that these were reports were printed on. This is a first edition, totally out of print. Also a valuable tool for stock certificate collectors Because this report also lists mine owners and different names for the same mine, it is also a valuable tool for collectors of stock certificates. Some mine descriptions contain brief histories of the mines in question (including dates of actual production) and previous owners. Oversize map folds out from report and shows where all the gold mines are; they are also discussed and detailed in the text. Rich gold mines Kern County was the largest producer of minerals in the state in 1933. Gold-silver ores are mainly found in the eastern part of the county. Best producing regions are near Mojave, Randsburg, Caliente Canyon, Piute Mountains and Kernville. Mines described Here are just a few of the mines described: Goler Canyon Placer district — southeast slope of the El Paso Mountains, seven to 10 miles west of Randsburg, extends from Last Chance Canyon on the southwest to Summit Diggings on the northeast. Water is hard to find so most of the gold is recovered by dry washers. However, the Goler Canyon Placer Company plans to install a washing plant with a 2,000-cubic-yard per day capacity. Water is to come from well it plans to sink. In testing operations, it Another tiny detail of a full-page map, this one showing underground workings at the Tropico Mining and Milling Company Mine, outside of Mojave. has recovered $1,500 in nuggets alone, with values ranging from 50 cents to $400 depending on size. Big Gold mine — could win the title for least imaginative name for a gold mine, three miles from Randsburg; vein filling is free gold, pyrite and scheelite (tungsten ore). One vein averages about four feet in width. This mine continued to be active for quite some time. By the 1940s, the owner had a mill at his Randsburg home (neighbors must love listening to that!) with a capacity of 12 tons a day. If the noise isn't enough, his neighbors get to look at a 25-ton bin, a six-by-eight-inch jaw crusher, an elevator and the always pleasant cyanide leaching tanks, three of them to be exact, eight feet in diameter. Suppose it's better than barking dogs. Then again, he probably had those too. Gold Peak mine — three miles from Dove Springs and 10 miles northwest of Cantil ... Both of these landmarks still very much exist, so the mine can't be very hard to find, especially with the coordinates in the book. Gold occurs free and in pyrite. A mill was erected at Dove Springs three miles east of the mine. Black Hawk gold mine — sometimes reported as being in San Bernardino County, this book has it in Kern, near Randsburg, with an estimated production of $400,000 to date. Total development is a not-too-shabby 5,000 feet, and that's a lot of pick and shovel work. Yellow Dog mine — gets my vote for the prize in the real-western-sounding mine-naming contest, although the "Rabid Bat" or "Angry Rattler" might have been better. Down the road from Mojave, ore is interlacing calcite crystals and free gold. High-grade ore was discovered in 1922, which "was the most important made in the district in recent years and caused a revival of interest in the district." We have many MANY more rare mining books! Just search for our ebay store, Rare Mining Books: http://stores.ebay.com/Rare-Mining-Books?_rdc=1 Tropico Mines — includes the Tropico, Lida and Fairview mines, all just a hop-skip-and-jump from downtown Mojave, home to never ending winds and blowing sand. All joking aside, the Tropico group is nothing to shake a creosote stick at, having pumped out a solid $3 million in gold (1940s data). Employed six men. Yellow Aster mine — another biggie, perhaps the biggie, near Randsburg of course, produced ore exceeding $10 million. The book devotes five or six pages total to this mine and the Ransburg district in general, not counting many other mines in the district. The mine has 15 miles (yes, that's miles) of workings on 14 levels. About 20 men were working the mine on a lease basis at the time of the report, but then shortly after that, the whole operation was shut down temporarily while the whole mine was being remodeled. Ruby Mining Company — between Cottonwood Creek and the Kern River, 15 miles east of Bakersfield. Country rock consists of mica schist intruded by a large mass of quartz diorite. Twelve men were working. "This property appears to have considerable prospective merit." A new stope was recently driven, uncovering two veins showing a width of seven feet. "No assays had been done on this vein matter, but it looks like ore." And many more mines and prospects, large and small, famous and forgotten. Miners go for the placer gold in Goler Canyon in 1933 (note old truck). Where is it? Kern County, in south-central California, is the next county north of Los Angeles and Orange counties and the third largest in the state. Adjacent counties are Inyo, Tulare, Kings, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Bernardino. Not only is Kern County itself filled with some of the state's richest mineral deposits, major supply routes also crisscrossed the county to other rich gold and silver strikes in more remote areas to the east and north, including mines at Cerro Gordo, Bodie, Darwin, and mines in Inyo County's Death Valley and Panamint Valley areas. Even the early 20th century boomtowns of Tonopah, Rhyolite (Bullfrog) and Goldfield (much farther north in Nevada) had supplies originate from — or cross — Kern County. The book: California Journal of Mines and Geology, 1933; Division of Mines, San Francisco, six by nine inches, 137 pages total, about 68 are about Kern County gold resources, by Burling Tucker and R. J. Sampson. Includes fold-out oversized maps, photos and tables. I would rate the report contents as overall very good with a poor cover page; everything is here, and the report interior is in great shape, an exception for these reports because they were originally printed on the thinnest almost-tissue paper possible. A few insignificant edge tears and some wear on the spine. Minimal flaking. Inside pages are in solid very good condition, with a minimum of discoloration. Tape on spine; small hole on front page. Quite frankly, considering the fragility of these reports, it's surprising any have survived. Most didn't. That why you see so few of them, and that's why this is the second to ever appear on ebay. This is a historical treasure for anyone interested in California gold mining in the depression years. This is almost one of a kind, people. You will not be seeing one of these again anytime soon, so buy it now. Or kick yourself in the butt for the next 10 years. As always, I am extremely conservative about rating book condition and very detailed in listing any potential flaw, no matter how slight. Payment methods and domestic shipping Paypal only. I pride myself on bulletproof packaging and ship in sturdy cardboard boxes or hugely padded envelopes.
