Description: Debasement"The Awakening Series"2oz - 39mm diameterLimited Mintage Brilliant Uncirculated - .9999 Silver enclosed in a capsule"Look back over the past, with its changing empires that rose and fell, and you can foresee the future, too." - Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The coin’s obverse features a detailed portrait of the Roman emperor Caesar. The round takes after the design of the Roman denarius as inspiration. Caesar’s spine and skull are openly visible and cracked, and his flesh is falling apart in a sweeping wave of rot working towards his face. He appears decrepit, and his face is the only thing that remains untouched. This is a representation of previously great societies and empires that collapsed and crumbled into ruin, specifically the Roman Empire. Underneath Caesar’s profile are the olive branch and bundle of arrows traditionally featured in the claws of the eagle on the U.S. $1 bill. The olive branch traditionally symbolizes peace, while the arrows are a representation of war. They are positioned as they were on U.S. silver coinage between 1801-1807, with the arrows on the left and the olive branch on the right. On those coins, this put the arrows into the dominant talon of the eagle, which upset European diplomats and journalists who claimed it was a symbol of aggression.Along the top rim of the coin is the word “Debasement”, which refers to the economic practice of decreasing something’s intrinsic value while maintaining its face value. This famously led to the value of the Roman denarius decreasing significantly as its silver content per coin gradually decreased over time. This ultimately resulted in hyper-inflation and led to financial ruin across the Roman Empire over the course of hundreds of years. The reverse design is unique to this installment of the Awakening series. Atop the pyramid of the all-seeing eye, the eye is replaced with the horse of the Weimar Republic, which was featured prominently on their coins during the period of their hyperinflation, even being featured on a 1 Billion Mark coin. The horse here is rotting away, symbolizing the rapid downward spiral of the Weimar republic as its economy collapsed. Thanks to the purveyor for the descriptive insight of this series.
