25 fresh venus fly trap seeds (harvested Aug 2024)

Description: These are fresh venus fly trap seeds harvested (August 2024) from my own collection! Each packet has 25 seeds (plus a couple extra). My plants are open pollinated. I have many cultivars like DCXL, B52, Jaws, Bohemian Garnet, FTS Maroon Monster, Trichterfalle, UK Sawtooth II, Dente, WIP Slim Snapper, etc. so you hopefully expect a wide range of traits, colors, and sizes from your seedlings. These seeds will be shipped in a standard untracked envelope. If you have any issues with your order, please contact me and I will try to address any issues! I recommend sprouting these seeds in a small plastic take-out container with holes drilled on the top. Baby fly traps are very small so they can easily dry out. Keeping them in a humid environment like said container will help them survive. Keep in mind that baby fly traps are not only small but also slow growing. It may take at least a full year before they grow bigger than a dime. I’ve been growing fly traps for 16 years now, including from my own seeds. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. *** VFTs are easy to grow but they have a few important (but easy to fulfill) requirements that can be easily missed. 1. Low nutrient water Rain water is easiest to come by. Otherwise, you can use distilled or reverse osmosis water. You should not use tap or well water or spring water unless you measure the total dissolved solids using a TDS meter. 2. Low nutrient soil The easiest mix is 50% peat moss and 50% perlite. You can also use sphagnum moss. You cannot use normal potting soil. Also beware of additives in the peat moss/perlite/sphagnum moss. Some brands will add fertilizer and fertilizers will kill VFTs. 3. Good lighting VFTs should ideally be grown outside. They do not do well indoors. They might do fine indoors at a south facing window with multiple hours of direct sunlight. However, baby fly traps, when grown in a plastic take-out container as suggested earlier can easily be steam cooked if left under direct sunlight. Instead, place them in an area with a lot of bright filtered light. Some additional tips are: 1. Don't fertilize Fertilizer will kill your VFTs. Your best bet is to feed them if you want them to grow faster, but feeding them is not required. 2. Don't feed them human food No burgers or milk products. You can use fish food. I breed flightless fruit flies to feed my baby fly traps when they are big enough. Beware of overfeeding them, whether that is feeding a single trap with too much food, or feeding too many traps at the same time. 3. Dormancy VFTs go dormant when the weather gets cooler. When they go dormant, they may drop all their traps and leaves but they are not dead. Dormancy is critical to their growth cycle and it is not recommended to skip it, even though they may survive for a few years without it. They should go dormant for a few months. I would avoid letting them face freezing temperatures, especially when they are seedlings, but keep them cool enough that they stay dormant.
