The first DVD is "Perry Como's Early American Christmas" from 1978, the second DVD is "Perry Como in the Holy Land" from 1980 and the third DVD is "Perry Como in Ireland from 1993". 1st DVD - Perry and crew visit Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia to bring us a colorful and tuneful look at an early American Christmas celebration. A fife and drum corps featuring a young drummer gives Perry an opportunity to sing "The Little Drummer Boy". Perry is our guide as we visit many of the local shops and crafts people. Guests include Diana Canova, the daughter of Judy Canova, a lovely young lady who does a fine job singing several solos and duets with Perry. The young violinist Eugene Fodor, who won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, treats us to a solo. Of interest to John Wayne fans is the big man himself making one of his final appearances and even raises his voice in song! Perry doesn't disappoint us and sings a number of songs appropriate to the holiday season. 2nd DVD - Perry Como, one of the finest artists ever to grace radio speakers and television screens, is seen here in one of his annual Christmas shows! Here, Perry visits Jerusalum, and other places of a strong religious back ground. He begins by singing I wonder as I wander, which he sings with pure brilliance, and relaxation in his voice! Later he meets up with a young lady, whom he sings some various traditional songs of Israel, such as 'The city of tradition'(The title of the song is somewhere along the lines of that - but it could be the correct title.) Later on in the show, Perry meets up with Richard Chamberlain, and together they discuss the Christmas story and other stories of the time. Perry also plants a tree in Jerusalum, with the help of two children. Here Perry sings all-time favourite songs of worship such as 'Ave Maria' and 'The Lord's prayer', along with newer Christmas songs such as 'Christ is born'. Well worth watching at Christmas time! 3rd DVD in Ireland. Although it's obvious that at 81, Perry Como would not be performing as in the past, consider the following: 1) He did amazingly well for a man of his age. Who else, at that age in that situation, could have looked and performed so well? It's obvious that, though in his twilight, there was still that glimmer of greatness showing through, even if sporadic, and indicated he was capping off a remarkable career. Perry Como's overall nature and personality helped ease the otherwise embarrasing moments where things didn't work as planned. It was this amiable and casual style that gave him part of his identity as an entertainer, and that seemed to make the concert all the more "him". With some time-adjusted understanding on the part of any who watch this, it is always a joy to see each year. The audience of over 4,000 had to be one of the most classy and gracious you'll ever see at any concert. I was amazed that, although most of them were "seniors", there were many young adults there (some even younger). Without exception, every shot of the audience displayed nothing other that the utmost love, respect, and admiration for someone they had obviously grown to appreciate immensely. Any miscue in the concert seemed to be graciously overlooked, and any view of the crowd demonstrated people thoroughly enjoying what they came to see. So, for sure, this has to be viewed with some understanding of who/what/when it was.
