You are bidding on about 30 INDIAN FIG CACTUS SEEDS - Opuntia Ficus - Indica . Some of the common English names for the plant and its fruit are Indian fig opuntia, Barbary fig, cactus pear, spineless cactus, Smooth Mountain Prickly Pear, Indian Fig, Mission Cactus, Tuberous Prickly Pear, Nopaland prickly pear, although this last name has also been applied to other less common Opuntia species. This is grown primarily as a fruit crop, but also for the vegetable nopales and other uses. This perennial shrub can grow up to 3-5 m height, with thick, succulent and oblong to spatulate stems called cladodes. It has a water-repellent and sun-reflecting waxy epidermis and thorns for leaves. Cladodes that are 1–2 years old produce flowers, the fruit's colors ranging from pale green to deep red . The plants flower in three distinct colors: white, yellow, and reddish / orange. The flowers first appear in early May through the early summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and the fruits ripen from August through October. The fruits are typically eaten, minus the thick outer skin, after chilling in a refrigerator for a few hours. They have a taste similar to sweet watermelon. Hardiness: USDA Zone 8b: to -9.4 °C (15 °F) Edible parts : Fruit - raw, cooked or dried for later use. Sweet and gelatinous. Lean and insipid. The unripe fruits can be added to soups etc, imparting an okra-like mucilaginous quality. The fruit is up to 4 cm long and 3 cm wide. Be careful of the plants irritant hairs. Pads - cooked or raw. Watery and very mucilaginous. Seed - briefly roasted then ground into a powder. It is also used as a thickener .
