If you want the real deal that will get attention this is the hat. It’s hard to find or buy this kind of authentic light wear in this old west hat. Fedoras have a lighter weight felt and are typically thinner. Cowboy hats have a heavier felt and are a bit thicker. Most of my hats are from the 70’s. So the beaver felt X rating would be higher than the same X rating in today’s standards. Modern hats that are labeled lower than a 20X by the manufacturers have been blending in wool instead of rabbit fur. So they are more coarse and won’t hold up in weather. Hats labeled with blend typically have wool blended in them. You really almost have to go to a retail store like Boot Barn or Cavanders and feel the different brand hats on the floor under a 20X. Then ask to feel a 20X Resistol or Stetson that they typically have behind the counters or in cases. Or better yet visit a hat maker and feel their felt hats. And if you take a note on prices you may be shocked at how much a good quality hat costs. High quality felt hats typically cost $400 and up. It’s not uncommon for a pure beaver felt hat (100X) to be at least $1,000.
