COCO MINT CONDITION This is a brand new, unread, prisinte condition booklet. Original, Sharp, Bright, Clean, Tight, Booklet Rich with Illustrations, Photos and Maps Extensive Notes and References and Indexed PUBLISHED BY THOMAS PUBLICATIONS IN 1990 Colonel Robert M. Powell, an officer in the 5th Texas Infantry Regiment, wrote about his experience at the Battle of Gettysburg on December 13,1884 in an article published in the Philadelphia Weekly Times entitled "With Hood at Gettysburg." This was the only recollection that Colonel Powell would share about his time serving in Hood's Brigade during the Civil War. Over a century later, the late Civil War Author and Historian Gregory Coco edited Colonel Powell's recollection of the battle in this excellent book titled "Recollections of a Texas Colonel at Gettysburg." The introduction by Mr. Coco gives the background of Colonel Powel who was born in Alabama in 1826, and moved to Danville, Texas in 1849 to engage in law and become a state legislator. On August 21, 1861, Powell was commissioned as a Captain in Company D of the Fifth Texas Infantry Regiment. Colonel Powell subsequently fought in the Battle of Gaines' Mill, Seven Pines, Second Bull Run (Manassas), South Mountain, and Antietam. Colonel Powell then describes the bitter fighting on the 2nd Day of July, 1863 at Gettysburg in his eyes only. He doesn't talk about the overall strategy and movements of the armies, but what was happening around him at the Devil's Den, and the assault of Little Round Top by the 4th and 5th Texas Regiment. Colonel Powell says that the assault at Devil's Den was much like "a scene strikingly like a devil's carnival." Yelling, whooping, desperate charges. Slightly and the seriously wounded soldiers crying out after the action. Colonel Powell was wounded then became a prisoner of war. Immediately after his capture, Colonel Powell describes meeting General James Kemper, the Confederate General who was captured on July 3rd, and his flirting with the visiting women. There are many other interesting stories that Colonel Powell described throughout this book from meeting with a Lieutenant of the 2nd Minnesota who was also wounded besides him at Little Round Top, describing how unpleasant Major General Isaac Trimble was towards his captures at the Gettysburg's Lutheran Theological Seminary, and the observations of many other soldiers and civilians Colonel Powell met and observed. After spending several weeks in Gettysburg, Colonel Powell was sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio confined as a POW until January 1865, and was paroled on February 6, 1865. Colonel Powell then took command of Hood's Texas Brigade and was present in the command throughout the final months of the war. After the war, Colonel Powell returned to Texas where he lived for eighteen years, then settled in St. Louis, Missouri where he died at the age of 90 on January 15, 1916. Greg Coco superbly edited this fascinating read of one of the Hood's Brigade officers. Great photos of Devil's Den and Little Round Top where Colonel Powell fought enhance the understanding of what he fought through. Also included are the official reports sent by fellow officers in the 5th Texas Infantry that describe Colonel Powell's capture and excellent footnotes by Coco gives great detail of the story of Colonel Powell's experience at Gettysburg. This booklet is brand new, unread and in pristine condition. It is sharp, bright, clean, and tight with no wear. The interior is clean with excellent, bright-white pages. There isn’t a mark in the book. It has no writing, smudging, foxing, pasteboards or stamps. It is not an ex-library book. It contains and Introduction, illustrations, photographs, maps, portraits, Epilogue, Two Appendices, a bibliography, and is fully indexed. It has exceptional notes and references. 64 pages. An excellent, first-hand memoir by a Confederate Colonel in Hood’s Brigade at Gettysburg. Track Page Views WithAuctiva's Counter
