DEWEY (1837-1917) graduated from the Naval Academy in 1858 and became a lieutenant in April 1861, serving the in Civil War aboard the side-wheeler Mississippi, in operations against New Orleans and on the Mississippi River. He was later on duty with the Atlantic blockade. He also served in the Spanish-American War. With orders to capture or destroy Spanish vessels in Philippine waters, he entered Manila Bay with his squadron on May 1, 1898. Rapid accurate fire sank or destroyed all ten ships of the Spanish fleet while there was little damage to American vessels and only eight injuries to American seamen.
