They are the principal inhabitants of the Saharan interior of North Africa, in the Saharan parts of Niger, Mali, and Algeria. Being nomadic, they on the move with their herds and camels over vast areas of the southern Sahara. The Tuareg are also know for their exquisite craftsmanship in working with leather. This type of leather bag the Tuareg call ‘Taseihat’. This bag is what the Tuareg use on their journey through the Sahara, filled with their household goods and then hang the full ‘Taseihat’ on the camel’s saddle. Tuareg leather bags are richly decorated with embroidery, green leather appliques and black paint in abstract geometric patterns and motifs. The colors used on the leather saddlebags are usually dyed in a rich burnt reds, burnished browns and mustard yellow colors and all usually have decorative fringe.
