Description: Antique 1800s Pierced Tin Phoebe Grease Lamp. It has a primitive Folk Art cut work and engraved pattern on both stems. The smaller oil cup is hooked into the larger oil cup by an arm and can be separated into 2 pieces. Overall dimensions are 8 1/2” tall. The oil cup is 3 3/4”x3”. It has lots of patina and some surface rust. There is a knob that appears to have been added at a later date. For stability? Please look carefully at the photos. This type of early lighting was fueled by whale oil or grease. A twisted cloth wick was laid in the narrow channel of the upper pan which held oil or grease. The lower pan collected drips from the burning wick, stopped mess, and possibly saved some fuel for re-use. A notched piece allowed adjustment of the two pans.
