Description: Antique ARTS & CRAFTS / ART NOUVEAUCopper-Clad SLIPPER Box This is an antique (1905-ish?) chest called a SLIPPER BOX. It has the look of ARTS & CRAFTS items, but others have referred to the style as Art Nouveau and Edwardian. There is artwork on the top that shows a woman with a long dress, (linen) cap, and Elizabethan-style RUFF NECK COLLAR. It suggests to me that she is sewing by the Fireside with a cat sitting by her! This SLIPPER BOX would have been set by the fireside (metal back to the fire) to keep your slippers warm when you put them on. It is a large size—14” wide by 10” deep and slanted 7-1/2” tall at back and 6-1/2” at the front. The top and sides are all hand-hammered COPPER-clad metal; the bottom and inside lid are not. The copper was applied with small round-head nails or brads, so there might be wood underneath (unknown). It has beautiful unpolished copper patina. The raised SLIPPERS name plate on top is about 3” x 9”. Theonly rough areas are at the bottom edges; otherwise the box is in very good condition.
