Description: During the 18th century, Chinese imperial porcelain wares, known as Famille Rose, were exported to overseas markets designed for Western tastes. Their palette of opaque overglaze enamels favored roses and pink colors. These rare Famille Rose dessert bowls with plates are hand-painted with a common motif of four flowers, each symbolizing one of the four seasons. Lotus represents Summer, the chrysanthemums represent Autumn, the plum blossoms represent Winter, and the peonies represent Spring. Branching gracefully into the surrounding white field, each floral arrangement is positioned around a central peach -- a symbol of longevity and marriage. The plate itself is shaped with a short footed base and thin walls that are slightly warped, reflecting the beauty of hand thrown pottery. These wares were produced in the City of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, dating to the Guangxu Period (1875-1908). Markings on the base represents the workshop or decorators studio. The Seven sets of bowls and saucers from my collection were used for a dessert of chilled lychees with an almond cookie. A soothing dessert after a heavy Chinese meal.
