Description: Japanese Antique Folk Toy Iron Frame Wood Fighting Spinning Top DETAILS OF ITEMThis spinning top measures approximately 2.25 inches tall by 2.13 inches in diameter. This is a type of Japaense fighting top. A plain wooden top is reinforced with a thick band of metal usually brass, copper or iron like in this particular piece to increase the power of the rotation and the striking ability. During the game, hitting the rotating top by a rope will increase the gyration even more and this action is called "adding life" to the top. The thickness of the metal band varies from region to region but generally a thick metal band top like this piece is seen from Tokyo to Hiroshima regions and thinner band tops are found in Southern and Northern region of Japan. The fighting tops were once a very popular outdoor game among the boys on New Year's Day in Japan but after World War II, it vanished due to the increasing dangerous traffic conditions on the streets of Japan. The condition of this piece is still very good though it has no throwing cord. The iron frame and the axis of the top are still intact and its age is from the 1930's.inkfrog terapeak
