There was no higher compliment than to be compared to a dragon. The mighty Emperor was represented as a dragon and the dragon was used as a symbol of authority and power. Here, a brass bowl is hand carved by a Chinese artisan with the good fortune symbol, Fu, in the center of the bowl and two four clawed dragons around the edge. The flaming pearl floats between them signifying the owner of the bowl will be blessed with good fortune, wealth and prosperity. The four clawed dragons indicate this bowl was intended for a 'noble' person. A five clawed dragon was for the Emperor, four clawed were for nobles and people of auspicious talents, while three clawed dragons were for commoners. Chinese dragons have adorned furnishings since before written history. The full significance and origin of the dragon is not known at this time.
