ART DECO Pochoir ~ RUSSIAN FRENCH ARTIST ~ 1929 Original VLADIMIR BOBERMAN

Description: A superb Art Deco hand stenciled pochoir from Russian/French artist Voldemar Boberman (1897-1977). The pochoir was published in a 1929 portfolio by Decoration Interieure Modern and is in shades of blue and brown, consisting of geometric abstracted figures on the theme of tennis. The work is initialed by the artist in the lower right and the image measures 6 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches, with frame and mat it is 13 1/4 x 16 1/2. Appears to show minor age toning, otherwise in excellent condition, frame looks to be of the period. Vladimir (Voldemar) Boberman (1897-1977) was born in the Armenian Oblast of the Russian Empire. Following the First World War, Boberman left his native country to begin an art career in Paris. There, he exhibited his paintings at the annual Paris Salon for many years. Boberman also designed abstract carpets for the firm of Decoration Interieure Modern (DIM). In 1929, DIM published a portfolio of his carpet designs rendered in pochoir. This stencil technique of printing originated in the 16th Century but is so labor intensive that it was replaced by less expensive techniques by the mid 1930s. Some of Boberman's pochoir designs were exibited in the 1989 exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; "POCHOIR by PAINTERS; An Exhibition of Books, Folios, Prints, and Ephemera, 1918-1938". David Rago Auctions recently sold a Boberman designed DIM carpet for $10,000.
