Description: Austria-Hungary: War Medal 1873. Bronze medal created December 2, 1873 by emperor Franz Joseph and awarded to all soldiers and sailors that participated in one or more campaigns during his reign, 1848-1916 (see von Falkenstien, Joseph; Imperial Austrian Medals and Decorations (1972) p. 95). Austria-Hungary had only limited military actions prior to 1914, including pacification of Bosnia 1878-1882 and the Boxer Rebellion in China 1900-1901. Austro-Hungarian troops that served in the field were also eligible until the death of Franz Joseph in 1916. The medal is in near extremely condition, but has never been cleaned, and therefore is tones and a little dirty; it is on the old original ribbon, which is also a bit dirty and worn, but intact. This is likely an early example of the War Medal; the ribbon is of a much fine weave than later examples. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition.
