Description: Maker: This beautiful antique stoneware plate was made in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, by Podmore, Walker & Co, or PW & Co. The company operated under that name from 1834 to 1856, when it was renamed Podmore, Walker & Wedgwood to reflect the role of Enoch Wedgwood as a senior partner in the business. It later became Wedgwood & Co when Enoch Wedgwood assumed control in 1859. Design: The blue cartouche mark on the reverse identifies the classic blue and white pattern as "Venus". It features a placid scene of a couple by the waterside as swans swim by. An elegant estate is in the background. The phrase "Pearl Stone Ware" is part of the mark. Size: The plate is 9 3/4 inches wide and weighs 1 pound 7 ounces. Condition: It has no nicks, chips, repairs or significant scratches. There is age discoloration, wear and noticeable crazing throughout, as is common in plates of this age and origin. There is a small manufacturing flaw in the band and the remnants of an old label are on the back. Please check all the photos very carefully - they are an important part of the description.
