This was an exhibit submitted as part of the Company’s efforts to show that its best and frequent advertising efforts were not attracting enough passengers to make the California Zephyr profitable. (The ICC issued an opinion on Feb. 13, 1967 requiring that the train be kept in operation for another year.) Western Pacific Railroad was formed in 1903. It was one of the original operators of the California Zephyr, which was a route between Chicago and the San Francisco area and promoted as a scenic route. One of its claims to fame with its Zephyrettes, who were on board hostesses. The trains operated from 1949 until 1970. In the 1960s it began to be a money-loser even though it was heavily utilized. Western Pacific tried for several years in the late 1960s (against public outcry) to discontinue the route, however the issues were complicated, and the Company was not successful until 1970. This docket of material was apparently used in one of those hearings with the Interstate Commerce Commission. M. M. [Myron Mathias, b. Seattle 1917- d. 2002 San Francisco]. He graduated from the University of Minnesota after WWII, then joined Western Pacific as an internal auditor, eventually rising through the ranks to become president, from 1965-1970.
