This style coin is one of the first types of coins to be struck in the New World! Beginning only 45 years after Columbus arrived to the New World, this type of coin was the first regularly issued coin of the Americas. Minted in Mexico City sometime between 1536 and 1555, this "late series" pillar type was struck during the reign of Queen Johanna, the daughter of Ferdinand & Isabel. Due to Johanna's mental illness, her son Carlos I was formally recognized as King conjointly with his mother. Johanna died in 1555; Carlos abdicated in favor of his son Philip in 1556.These carefully cut, nearly round hammered Spanish silver treasure coins were the predecessors to the irregular Spanish "Cobs", both of which were hand struck. The obverse (front) bears an ornate double pillar design above waves. The pillars are symbolic of the Straits of Gibraltar (entrance to the New World) and the waves for the sea. Along the center line is the inscription "PLVS" or "PLVS VLTRA". The "Plus Ultra" Latin inscription served as a warning to other countries: We own more beyond the Straits of Gibraltar, the New World. The reverse (back) bears a simple shield beneath a crown which is divided into four quadrants. Within the four quadrants are the Lions of Leon and the Castles of Castile.
