The battle took place near the key fortress of Kadesh, in the Orontes River Valley in the Levant. This area had been under dispute between the two empires for years. As with most ancient battles, very little is certain about the events of that day. A suprise attack by the HIttites nearly wiped out an Egyptian Division, then swept on to the Egyptians' main camp. But the Hittites stopped to loot the Egyptian Camp, and Egyptian reinforcements poured onto the battlefield. The HIttie chariotry, nearly 3,500 strong, was pinned against the Orontes and wiped out. Then, for soe reason unknown to history, Ramses chose to "declare victory and leave." He pulled back to his camp, and the campaign ended. Images sell!
