The figures with their backs turned in the foreground are positioned in the way of the Duke of Bourbon, the adversary of the Duke of Brittany, who is about to enter the tiltyard where he will take his oath. This ceremony took place the day before the great tournament. In this joust the Duke of Brittany is the challenger and the Duke of Bourbon is the defendant, who accepts his challenge. The two knights, escorted by their followers, come from opposite ends of the field to swear that they will conform to the rules of the contest. They do this in front of the judges who, in the original picture, are sitting on a platform next to the lords and ladies in the spectators' boxes. Enter the Duke of Bourbon, in civilian costume, without armour, carrying a baton in his hand. Behind him is his banneret, though only the head of his mount is visible in this picture. The Duke's route is lined with the heralds of the Duke of Brittany, wearing his coat of arms and ermine capes, a trumpeter - also wearing the Brittany arms - and other knights from different houses. The Duke is riding a charger harnessed with a steel chamfrain and a headstall topped by gold fleur de lys. Upper left and bottom right panel: Fashionable gentlemen from around 1488. They are wearing skullcaps called bicoquets under large hats with upturned brims, which are decorated with plumes that can either stand upright or lie flat. Their gowns are open at the front and trail along the ground. They have long sleeves, set far back on the shoulders to reveal nearly the whole front of the doublet beneath.
