Description: DESCRIPTION: Maurine Spinks is one of several baconi type hybrids that we grow. The baconi types are some of the most attractive of the over 1000 varieties of crinum in our collection. It has the highest bloom count so far (15 on 36" tall scapes) of them all. This has an incredible, white bloom with dark red stripes. It is fragrant and mature bulbs will form several offsets each year. The foliage is upright, fountainesque, and about 20" high. This variety is more tender and the foliage freezes back easily in the winter. BACKGROUND: Maurine Spinks is a X baconi type hybrid ( C. zeylanicum x C. americanum or C. erubescens) and the hybridizer is most likely Patrick Malcolm, the founder of the Nursery at Ty Ty. The flower is an open star, very much like americanum, and it is tender like zeylanicum. Similar named clones are Belle of Seville and Fourth of July. Typical of zeylanicum hybrids the red stripe is darker towards the edge of the flower and fades as it gets near the center. Most zeylanicum hybrids also have a distinctive light green stripe that runs up the keel (reverse) of the leaf. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a tender, but easy to grow bulb that should do well along the Gulf Coast. It tolerates a wide range of soils but needs warmer temperatures (probably OK down into the high teens), at least to zone 8 (planted deeper and mulched - I know some that survive just fine in zone 7B). Zone 9 or above should require no special care. Blooms come in mid-summer and continue, on and off, into the fall. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, and they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a medium-size bulb at least 2 years old and about 1/2-1" in diameter which should bloom within 2 years. Crinum do not like to be moved, so it can take a year just to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive. The photos show the plant in various stages of growth. Please feel free to contact us for additional information, and click on "Me" following our star rating.
