Description: DESCRIPTION: Candy Twist is one of the most beautiful crinum that we offer. It is a mid-size plant with white flowers that have a VERY wide red band in each flower petal. It is widly flared, trumpet-shaped and has a very strong scape (stem). The leaves are more erect than some crinum but a mature plant will still take up several square feet. We have recorded as many as 23 flowers on scapes as tall as 29". Mature bulbs will produce a couple of new offset bulbs each year growing tightly around the "mother" bulb which can grow huge to about 7" in diameter after about 10 years. Flowers are fragrant and make excellent cut flowers. This is a heavy bloomer from March through June here in zone 9, northeast Florida. We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids and offer probably the largest selection of crinum in the world. BACKGROUND: We purchased this bulb in 2003 from another collector, but it was not identified properly. After growing it for a few years we realized this mistake. After growing it 7 years we had enough bulbs to start limited distribution and gave it the name, Candy Twist. About that time we purchased an old, rare hybrid called Carroll Abbott, so now we are inclined to believe that this might actually be Carroll Abbott but are still not positive. They bloom at the same time of the year and look nearly identical. It stands to reason that this is NOT some recent hybrid primarily because it is SO unique and would have had a proper name. There is nothing in our collection that is even close to this bulb except Carroll Abbott. In any case, this is most likely a herbertii cross (crinum bulbispermum crossed with crinum scabrum). This is the same cross as Carroll Abbott. If it is Carroll Abbott then it is a very high quality hybrid named in honor of the late Texas wildflower advocate, Carroll Abbott. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils and extended dry periods. It will tolerate freezing weather to at least zone 7, with mulch. Bulbs can survive nicely for very extended periods if allowed to dry. They do best if planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent, container plants. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a small-size bulb about 1 year old. It will be about 1" in diameter and should bloom within 3 years. Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves if possible. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive. The photos show the plant in various stages of growth. Please feel free to contact us for additional information, and click on "Me" following our star rating.
