Description: DESCRIPTION: American Maid is one of the smallest form of digweedii that we grow and one of the most reliable. We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids. In our opinion, the digweedii type blooms are among the most INCREDIBLE blooms in the world of crinum. American Maid is rare and has not been widly distributed. It makes an excellent selection for a container or a front border of a flower bed. The beautiful white, star-shaped flowers have a red stripe running down each teapal/sepal. We grow about 2 dozen forms of digweedii. We have recorded as many as 6 flowers on scapes as tall as 18". Digweedii also can go by the common name Nassau Lily and it is a term that refers to any hybrid form of Milk and Wine crinum that have a star, not a trumpet shape, with wide, overlapping tepals/sepals. Our largest bulb is almost 3" in diameter. It offsets quite fast and bulbs can produce 6 or more offsets each year. It is reportedly fertile and will form seeds, but we have not observed that. Most likely it needs some help in pollination. We have recorded blooms from May through October here in zone 9, northeast Florida. They are VERY fragrant, smelling like lilac. They will form beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. These plants have more erect leaves and a small clump of bulbs only takes up about one square foot, much less than most crinum. We are offering this for the first time on EBay in December 2013. BACKGROUND: This was hybridized by the late Les Hannibal of California and distributed by Marcelle Sheppard who has been growing and hybridizing crinum since the 1950's. We are classifying it as a digweedii type cross based on its appearance. Our opinion, because this is somewhat fertile, is that this is probaby not just an F1 cross of two species crinum but a backcross of some kind where the original hybrid was crossed back onto one of the parent plants or another fertile crinum. The digweedii type cross was officially named when first crossed in 1820, a cross of C. americanum and C. scabrum. In collections, digweedii appear under pseudonyms such as Erubescens, Fimbriaulum, Submersum or ‘Royal White.’ It is none of these. The digweedii/Nassau Lily dates back in the South over 125 years where sisters in San Patricio, TX convent cultivated them as early as 1876. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a semi-hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It is a bit more tender than many crinum and should do fine outside to at least zone 7+ or 8. It tolerates a wide range of soils. Digweedii typically bloom in the second half of the summer opening in the early evening and you can smell them just walking nearby but American Maid is a special treat since it opens as early as May. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry.
