Description: DESCRIPTION: Fay Hornbuckle is a rare form very similar to Ellen Bosanquet. Ours have produced 18 buds on 36" tall scapes. It is taller, and somewhat darker, than Ellen Bosanquet. Flowers are very fragrant. It is a mid-summer bloomer that forms bulbs about 6" in diameter. Multiple scapes will emerge from larger bulbs, extending the blooming period. Leaves are wavy, look like a corn plant, and can grow to 6'. It forms offset bulbs steadily, but not as fast as many other forms of crinum. On occasion it will form bi-colored flowers or both white and red flowers in the same unbel (see the 3 photos). This type of random white color is not uncommon among most red crinum hybrids. This is a very worthwhile crinum that is easy and fun to grow, and one of the darkest reds in our collection of over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: I'm not certain about the hybridizer, but it is most likely Patrick Malcolm (owner of The Nursery at Ty Ty, Georgia). This note came from a buyer: "This bulb is named after my Aunt Fay Patrick Hornbuckle, who was an incredible gardener! She was my grandmother’s1st cousin AND my grandmother’s sister in-law. They married Hornbuckle brothers and lived across the road from each other until death. Aunt Fay started a small flower business, while her husband ran the town hardware store (that he bought from my grandfather). The flower business still exists: Hornbuckle Wholesale Florist, Omega, GA, owned by her son, Tom Hornbuckle:).” She also said that her aunt was a very sweet person who everyone loved and that she would send me a photo of her aunt in her flower garden." GROWING CONDITIONS: Flowers appear in early June and continue to August in zone 9 (later in cooler zones). This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils, extended dry periods, and will tolerate freezing weather to zone 7, possibly lower, if the bulb is planted deeply and mulched. Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. They can take full sun, but blooms do best in partial shade. They will also make excellent, large container plants. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a medium-size bulb about 1 1/2" in diameter, and at least 2 years old which should bloom within 2 years. Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent.
