Description: DESCRIPTION: We found this at a small nursery visiting a friend in Temple, TX, so, appropriately, we named the bulb after him. The largest grow to about 8" in diameter. These offset moderately and a bulb of that size would be at least 10 years old. The goweni hybrids are especially nice with the light pink stripe on the inside and keel of the bud and the "fancy" recurved petal tips, making them look more delicate than the herbertii hybrids (C. scabrum x C. bulbispermum). We have recorded have had as many as 13 flowers on 27" tall scapes. Goweni bloom late May, June, July and sometimes in September (I have never had any August blooms). It will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. It is one of the more attractive of the over 1000 varieties of crinum that we grow including over 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Goweni is a cross of the species C. bulbispermum x C. zeylanicum. It is a quite distinct and unique hybrid first crossed in 1820 in England by J. W. Gowen. This was one of the earliest crinum bulbs to come to the southern US in the early 1800's. The cross has been repeated many times over the years, so there are many slight variations in circulation depending on the genetics of the parent plants which can vary greatly. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a semi-hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils and cool temperatures, at least to zone 7 and probably zone 6 with heavy mulching in the winter. Because it has bulbispermum in its parentage, it is more cold hardy than most crinum. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a small-size bulb at least 1 year old and 1" in diameter that should bloom for you within 3 years. Crinum do not like to be moved, so it can take a year just to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive. The photos show the plant in various stages of growth. Please feel free to contact us for additional information, and click on "Me" following our star rating.
