Description: Dicentra - Bleeding Heart. You will receive your choice of one bare root of ‘Formosa’ or ‘Alba’ Dicentra (Bleeding Heart). Dicentra - Bleeding Heart ‘Formosa’ Hardiness Zones 4-9, Shade to Part Shade, Pink flowers, Bloom time is June - July. With graceful, fern-like foliage, this is the ballerina of native plants. The heart shaped deep-rose pink flowers on faint purplish stems hang delicately from the arching, blue-green foliage. Arising in the spring and often melting away in the hot summer, the bleeding heart is best grown in damper, but not soppy-wet sites. It is at its best in shady ravines, under trees, and in combination with ferns, foam flowers, vine maples and trillium. Sometimes it will awaken for a second bloom in fall. Dicentra ‘Formosa’ does not go dormant as does Dicentra spectabilis. The Western U.S. species – formosa – is more drought-tolerant. Makes a nice groundcover or front-of-the-border plant. This is a Herbaceous perennial. Planting Instructions: May be planted in any well-drained soil. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly. Partial shade with rich, organic, moist soil. Will tolerate full sun if given enough moisture. Does not like wet soil in the winter or dry soil in the summer. Mulch plants for the first winter so they will become established. Pests or Diseases: No serious insect or disease problems. Some susceptibility to aphid infestations. Dicentra Spectabilis ‘Alba’ is the charming, white-flowered form of the Old-Fashioned Bleeding Heart that has been a garden favorite for years. Hardiness zones 4-9, shade to partial sun, pure white flowers, bloom time May - June. It is a vigorous plant that will provide successful results for even the beginning gardener. This perennial will mature to a large size and is best left undisturbed. Graceful, early summer-flowering perennial has sprays of heart-shaped flowers dangling from arching, fleshy stems. Best for the shaded border or woodland garden. Because foliage goes dormant, it is best to plant this bleeding heart through a loose ground cover or among later developing perennials such as hostas and ferns which will fill in as the bleeding heart foliage begins to die back. This is a Herbaceous perennial. Also a good cut flower. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Prefers moist, humusy soils in part shade. Intolerant of wet soils in winter and dry soils in summer. Pests or Diseases: No serious insect or disease problems. Some susceptibility to aphid infestations. Good soil drainage is essential for plant survival.
