Also a free "floating" display stand. Dimetrodon was a dinosaur-like reptilian in a family called synapsids. They lived before dinosaurs in the Permian period, about 50 million years before the first dinosaur. Dimetrodon lived about 270-286 million years ago, and actually had some mammal-like characteristics. From the Texas Red Beds.This limb bone segment measures 1.54" at the longest measurement (39.2 mm.). It was a couple pieces found together in the ground, and reattached to each other with Paleo Bond. This is not considered damage or restoration with these reptiles or dinosaurs. In fact, the vast majority of ancient skeletons displayed in museums are using bones that were originally found in multiple pieces. Dimetrodon and other synapsids had certain features common to mammals, such as certain places in the skull, but they were not mammals. Mammal like features included a single lower jaw bone, complex teeth for grinding, large brains, and three tiny middle ear bones, like mammals have. Dimetrodon could grow to 11 feet in length. It is most famous for its large sail on its back. The sail was made of elongated spines that extended from the vertebrae. It was definitely a meat-eater, and today it is a very popular animal of long ago. Dimetrodon is extremely popular with paleo fans, including children, and is often included with dinosaurs and Edaphosaurus in books, etc.We invite you to visit our store.
