Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Susanna Simpson - 1816. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following two verses, the second with a tree to each side and both underlined with a floral border May God bless them that gave me thisAnd crown them with everlasting bliss~~~~~~~~~Virtue's the chiefest beauty of the mindThe noblest ornament of human kindVirtue's our safeguard and our leading starIt guides our reason when our senses err Susanna's name and the date of May 10th 1816 are contained centrally within the lower section of the linen with a flower basket to their left and right and a flower below. There is a floral urn beneath the flower with a bird and crown to both sides, then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with areas of faint, speckled staining. There are also a few areas of damage and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later, clean backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century bird's eye maple frame with later gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a small area of damage to the veneer on the lower right corner. Measures 12" x 14 1/2" (sight size) and 15 1/2" x 17 3/4" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
