Description: Early Post-War Western Gun Belt with HolsterIt was not long after the introduction of revolvers that holsters for them began to make their appearance. The earliest of these were distinctly military in form, following earlier holster designs like pommel holsters for attachment to one's saddle. It was not until after the Mexican War that belt worn holsters for civilians began to appear. By the late 1850's, a distinctly western style of holster heavily influenced by Spanish/Mexican leather-working techniques began to take shape. Its development would remain slow through the middle 1860's, although both sides during the Civil War utilized military style belt holsters. The catalyst for the development of the truly western gun-belt coincided with the development of revolvers that utilized self-contained metallic cartridges. This ammunition made the revolver a more practical and effect weapon, and gun-belt and holster quickly followed. Our Early Post-War Western Gun Belt and Holster is typical of the styles that emerged in the late 1860's and remained popular for decades. The wide belt has loops for holding cartridges and the open top holster will accommodate many different models of revolver. Unlike later belts worn low on the hips, this belt is designed to ride nearer the wearer's natural waistline in more usual fashion for the period. The belt is adjustable to fit most sizes from 34-48 inches.
