He was so stricken by the experience that he depicted her on her deathbed in a series of paintings and prints, titled The Sick Child, from 1885-1926. All six painted versions and some of the prints show his aunt Karen at the bedside while Sophie gazes beatifically, as if with second sight, upon a pair of closed curtains, symbolizing death. In lithographs like this one, Munch cropped the composition so that we only see Sophie’s gaze upon the curtain, her face awash in light. This seems to have been the feature of the experience that haunted Munch most. What do the dying see in their final moments that we cannot?
