Description: 11 volume set of the complete works of Ralph Waldo Emerson published soon after his death and edited by James Elliot Cabot, his literary executor and and copyright by his son. Upset at a British publisher’s attempt to compile a series of his uncollected essays, Emerson was able to halt production of these by agreeing to put the works together himself. As his powers were failing and his abilities on the wane, he and his family hired Cabot to assist. This edition was published posthumously in 1893 with preface by Cabot. Frontispieces in volumes one and nine by S.A. Schoff and J.A. Wilcox, respectively, on India paper. All volumes are in good condition with some uncut and some cut pages; all are untrimmed. Good Condition: 8vo: 11 volumes; all in cream over publisher’s boards with black lettering on the spines: some scuffing and shelf rub to the boards: occasional scuffed corners: soiling and fading: edgewear: both cut and uncut pages: volumes untrimmed; spine heads and tails occasional damage (bends and fray) with most being solid: slight discoloration and browning inside boards front and rear: “Emerson’s Works”: Eleven Volumes: Cambridge: Riverside Press: 1893RARES1893JPQA
